- Our mission statement states that “Creighton exists for students and
learning.”
- We want Creighton University to be a positive learning environment for
its students
4
- Some educators abuse their power
- According to AAMC studies over 16% students report mistreatment while in
medical school
- Mistreatment ranges from requiring students to perform personal services
such as picking up dry cleaning, to public belittling and other forms of
mistreatment and abuse
5
- The goal of Creighton University School of Medicine is to create a
positive teaching environment in which faculty, residents, students and
staff teach each other with dignity and respect.
6
- As you teach, keep in mind the positive qualities and teaching
techniques of some of your favorite teachers
- Learn student’s needs
- Challenge and encourage them to do their best
7
- Provide clear objectives or expectations
- View teaching as an opportunity rather than a burden
- Look for teaching moments
- Actively involve students by asking questions; use Socratic method
- Cater instruction to the needs of the individual or group
8
- Reinforce and praise the student
- Provide timely and constructive feedback and evaluation
- Practice the Golden Rule - Treat the student as you would like to be
treated
9
- When providing feedback be:
- Fair
- Specific
- Consistent
- Timely
- Flexible
- Open
- Collaborative
10
- Students, staff, faculty, and patients are to be treated with respect
- Relationships with patients must be professional
- Dual relationships of a romantic or sexual nature are strictly
prohibited and will be subject to disciplinary action
11
- Promote an atmosphere where people can work and learn with respect,
dignity, freedom from discrimination and free from the threat of
physical violence or verbal abuse
- It is intolerable to mistreat people because of their race, religion,
ethnicity, physical disability, gender or sexual orientation
12
- CU does not tolerate
- Physical attacks or acts of violence
- Physical or verbal threats
- Verbal harassment
- Slurs
- Degrading humor
- Public belittling
- Mandated personal services outside of the educational environment
(e.g., baby sitting, shopping)
13
- CU also does not tolerate
- Unnecessary words or acts inflicted with the intent to humiliate.
- It is understood that pointing out during rounds, conferences, etc.
that a student has not adequately prepared for his/her assignments is not
mistreatment unless done in an inappropriate manner.
14
- If a person believes he/she is a victim of mistreatment or abuse:
- Try to resolve the issue themselves (many issues can be resolved
informally); if the person is uncomfortable with that then…
- Seek assistance from the Associate Dean for Student Affairs (280-2905)
who may directly intervene with the accused party and/or contact the
Chair of the department involved to determine the appropriate action
15
- All attempts will be made to keep the situation confidential to the
greatest extent possible
- Complaints will be handled quickly with the goal of protecting the
student from harm or any type of retaliation
16
- Any complaint or witness found to be dishonest or malicious in making
the allegation of mistreatment will be subject to disciplinary action
