Teacher-Learner Relationship
  • Our mission statement states that “Creighton exists for students and learning.”
  • We want Creighton University to be a positive learning environment for its students

Teacher-Learner Relationship
  • Some educators abuse their power
  • According to AAMC studies over 16% students report mistreatment while in medical school
  • Mistreatment ranges from requiring students to perform personal services such as picking up dry cleaning, to public belittling and other forms of mistreatment and abuse

  • The goal of Creighton University School of Medicine is to create a positive teaching environment in which faculty, residents, students and staff teach each other with dignity and respect.

  • As you teach, keep in mind the positive qualities and teaching techniques of some of your favorite teachers
  • Learn student’s needs
  • Challenge and encourage them to do their best

  • Provide clear objectives or expectations
  • View teaching as an opportunity rather than a burden
  • Look for teaching moments
  • Actively involve students by asking questions; use Socratic method
  • Cater instruction to the needs of the individual or group

  • Reinforce and praise the student
  • Provide timely and constructive feedback and evaluation
  • Practice the Golden Rule - Treat the student as you would like to be treated

  • When providing feedback be:
    • Fair

CU Teacher – Learner Relationship Policies
  • Students, staff, faculty, and patients are to be treated with respect
  • Relationships with patients must be professional
  • Dual relationships of a romantic or sexual nature are strictly prohibited and will be subject to disciplinary action

Student Mistreatment and Abuse
  • Promote an atmosphere where people can work and learn with respect, dignity, freedom from discrimination and free from the threat of physical violence or verbal abuse
  • It is intolerable to mistreat people because of their race, religion, ethnicity, physical disability, gender or sexual orientation

Student Mistreatment and Abuse
  • CU does not tolerate
    • Physical attacks or acts of violence
    • Physical or verbal threats
    • Verbal harassment
    • Slurs
    • Degrading humor
    • Public belittling
    • Mandated personal services outside of the educational environment (e.g., baby sitting, shopping)

Student Mistreatment and Abuse
  • CU also does not tolerate
    • Unnecessary words or acts inflicted with the intent to humiliate.
    • It is understood that pointing out during rounds, conferences, etc. that a student has not adequately prepared for his/her assignments is not mistreatment unless done in an inappropriate manner.

Student Mistreatment and Abuse
  • If a person believes he/she is a victim of mistreatment or abuse:
    • Try to resolve the issue themselves (many issues can be resolved informally); if the person is uncomfortable with that then…
    • Seek assistance from the Associate Dean for Student Affairs (280-2905) who may directly intervene with the accused party and/or contact the Chair of the department involved to determine the appropriate action

Confidentiality & Protection from Retaliation
  • All attempts will be made to keep the situation confidential to the greatest extent possible
  • Complaints will be handled quickly with the goal of protecting the student from harm or any type of retaliation

Malicious Accusations
  • Any complaint or witness found to be dishonest or malicious in making the allegation of mistreatment will be subject to disciplinary action
